Over recent years, as drum & bass has continued its evolution from a UK-centric scene into a truly global movement, few countries have taken to the genre quite like Russia.

No one could have predicted back in mid-90s London that, 15 years later, that distant land would be home to some of the biggest raves on the planet and ever-growing roster of home-grown production talent. Of all the names to surface from the East in recent times, that of Subwave stands head and shoulders above all others…

After consistently turning heads over the last four years with his ultra-deep take on the D&B sound, Subwave was a key exponants of the style that came to be labelled ‘minimal D&B’, consistently delivering stripped back, intricately rhythmic and sub-bass driven grooves for some of D&B’s most credible imprints.

Releases for Critical, Shogun Audio and Hospital led to one of the scene’s most well known ambassadors, Goldie, snapping up the young Russian’s signature for Metalheadz. And so Subwave began working on this, his eponymous self-titled debut album for D&B’s most legendary label.

Packing eleven full-length tracks, this is an album that shimmers with sophistication and oozes quality throughout, tempering tense, nervous atmospherics with an all-enveloping sense of warmth and unshakable groove. Exploring half-time, ‘autonomic’ style D&B rhythms, house, techno and, of course, conventionally structured drum & bass, ‘Subwave’ deserves attention from right across the electronic music gamut.

Here we have two of the album tracks most suited to club play which not only display Subwave’s versatile sound to great effect, but also show exactly why he’s one of the most exciting talents to emerge in D&B for some time.

‘Senses’ is a beautiful balance between euphoric chord progression, soulful vocals and gradually building intensity. By the end of this track the crowd will have melted into step with its bright and breezy manner.

Contrasting that is ‘The Mines’, a deadly explosive weapon if ever we’ve heard one. This track is a surefire way to get the dance floor moving with some classic Headz inspiration mixed up with heart-warming musical sections.
