Having already made an impressive debut with Cutline’s ‘Runnin’ ft. Belle Humble, Pilot Records continues to astound with yet another massive release. This time Pilot pulls in Rollz to drop an incredible four-track EP that will undoubtedly have bass music fans the world over queuing up to slide them into their sets or onto their iPods.
Having risen through the drum & bass ranks, Rollz has already caught the ear of Radio 1’s Zane Lowe and Annie Mac and has had his tracks thoroughly rinsed by every ‘big dog’ DJ on the D&B dubplate circuit. Here he offers four slices of musical experimentation that play with familiar formulas and turn them on their heads.
Kicking off the EP, the title track ‘The Music’ starts gently, progressing throughout before dropping into a euphoric piece of drum & bass that’s ever morphing and changing. This could be considered a delicate but concise middle finger to the formulaic arrangements that usually plague D&B.
‘Capture Me’ envelopes you with synths and vocal snippets while the underpinning bassline offers plenty of weight for the dance floor. Then ‘This World’ comes crashing through the speakers with an intense and grizzling drop that’s pure menace. Juxtaposed with twinkling melodies and soulful samples, this track proves that Rollz can deliver a fine balance that few producers can match.
Finally, rounding off this unbelievable EP, ‘Be Glad’ drops the tempo and brings back some classic breakbeats before drenching them in sidechained synths and rib-rattling bass notes. Here Rollz crafts something that’s genuinely different.
